Privacy and your data

This page explains what happens to information when you read this site. There are no accounts and no sign-up, so most of what you might expect a website to hold simply is not collected here.

What we never ask you for

You can read every page here without creating an account, logging in or handing over a name, email address or phone number. Nothing on this site asks you to sign up, subscribe or submit personal details to access content, and there is no member area holding a profile about you.

If you follow a link to our partner, any information you give after that point is handled by the partner under its own privacy terms, not by this site. We do not receive or store the details you enter there. Read the partner's privacy notice before you provide anything to it.

How analytics data gets used

Like most sites, this one may use analytics to count visits and understand which pages are read. That kind of tool records technical information such as the pages viewed, the referring link and the type of device or browser used. It is used to see whether the site is working and which topics are useful.

Analytics of this kind does not tell us who you are. It does not give us your name or contact details, and it is not used to build a profile of an individual reader. If analytics are running on a given visit, the information is aggregated into reports about traffic rather than about people.

Cookies and the Act

Cookies are small files a site or a third-party tool may place in your browser. They can remember settings or help count visits, and you can block or delete them in your browser settings. Blocking them may affect how some parts of a page behave, but it will not stop you reading the content.

Personal information handled in Australia is covered by the Australian Privacy Act 1988, which sets out how such information should be collected, used, kept secure and given access to. This site is written to sit within that framework: little is collected, and what is collected is limited in scope.

How to request deletion of your information

Because there are no accounts, there is normally no personal record here to correct or delete. If you believe this site holds information about you, you can write to the editorial desk using the contact route published on the site and describe what you think is held and why.

We will look at the request and respond, and where information is held and the Privacy Act 1988 gives you a right to access or correction, we will act on it. If you are not satisfied with the response, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner explains how to take a privacy concern further.
